Mahonia nervosa

      Description

This low-growing evergreen shrub features an upright and spreading habit, reaching a mature height of 1 to 2 feet and a width of 2 to 3 feet. Hardy in USDA zones 5 to 9, it thrives in cool to moderate temperatures and partial to full shade. The foliage offers striking year-round appeal, turning bronze to purplish-red in fall. Clusters of small, bright yellow flowers bloom in late winter to early spring, giving way to blue-black berries that are attractive to wildlife. The plant prefers moist, well-drained, acidic to neutral soils and has good resistance to deer. Its distinctive, holly-like leaves make it a popular choice for naturalized woodland gardens and shaded borders, providing texture and seasonal interest.
