Rhamnus frangula 'Columnaris'
DETAILS AND CARE
This deciduous shrub exhibits a slender, columnar habit, making it an excellent choice for hedges and vertical accents in landscapes. Hardy in zones 3-7, it thrives in temperatures ranging from -40°F to 0°F. In fall, its foliage transitions to warm yellow tones, adding seasonal interest. Though it produces small, inconspicuous whitish flowers, the fruit is more notable: small, round berries that ripen to a shiny black. Preferring moist, well-drained soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH, it maintains its upright form and grows to a mature height of 10-15 feet with a narrow spread of 3-5 feet. Deer-resistant and adaptable to various soil types, this low-maintenance plant is perfect for creating privacy or enhancing garden structure.
