Syringa vulgaris 'Ludwig Spaeth' (purple)
DETAILS AND CARE
This deciduous shrub boasts an upright, multi-stemmed habit with an oval to rounded shape, reaching a mature height of 10–12 feet. Recommended for USDA hardiness zones 3–7, it thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained, rich loamy soil. In late spring, it produces abundant, highly fragrant, deep purple single flowers in large, showy panicles, adding a burst of vivid color to the landscape. While it offers no distinctive fall color, its foliage creates an attractive green backdrop throughout the growing season. This lilac is deer-resistant and an excellent choice for hedges, screens, or specimen planting. It does not bear fruit but is valued for its vibrant blossoms and pollinator attraction. Regular pruning after blooming is recommended to maintain its shape and encourage next year’s flower production.
